Punggol East: the son rises in the east, so does the daughter!
Elections -- and by-elections -- for parliamentary seats are a serious matter, but that has not stopped the media from having a good-humoured dig at two of the candidates. In a sense, PAP candidate Koh Poh Koon asked for it by declaring himself a Son of Punggol, since he had lived there as a child. Not to be outdone, Workers' Party candidate Lee Li Lian said she grew up in Lorong Liew Lian, also in the east, as well as in Buangkok, which is part of Punggol. That was all the New Paper needed to come up with this teaser blurb yesterday (Jan 15) for its page 6 story:
I thought the Singapore Democratic Party made a courageous decision in pulling out from the by-election. But two other parties, very small outfits, decided to go ahead, so now it will be a four-cornered contest come Jan 26:

Hello, this is Punggol East, not the Middle East!
One man -- not any of the eligible candidates -- turned up today (Nomination Day) dressed in this garb:

Ah well... even the traditional incoming (Chinese New Year) Snake is no longer depicted in a recognisable form, as it made its way around Chinatown the other day:
