Wally and Smiley: Mascot malfunctions!

Singapore "mascots" are not having it easy. First, a publicity stunt in which Singa the Courtesy Lion supposed quit his job in a huff because people here were still discourteous (he's not really quitting, lah, we are then told) was rubbished.

Now, Water Wally, the national water agency PUB's mascot, has been "accused" of peeping at a boy taking a shower!

Having seen the video link in the story, I think the folks who suggested that Water Wally was a Peeping Tom should go take a shower! C'mon, Water Wally is just a water droplet (even if, for the purpose of shooting the video, someone has to be inside the costume). And that very brief segment above did not "expose" the boy, anyway. A case of "chai pah siew eng" (nothing better to do)!

More to the point, I agree with other netizens that this video, and an earlier version are -- like the Singa brouhaha -- a purposeless stunt. How does this video show (and convince) people that the way to save water is to shower in five minutes, when what all the characters in it do are just to prance around?

An ST story last weekend featured the several mascots in Singapore. This one is definitely not doing its job!...

Really? How does Smiley Squirrel "encourage children to save" when the interest rate is nut-thing to shout about (less than one per cent, way below the inflation rate)! C'mon, Smiley Squirrel, do your job and tell your boss POSB to show (us) some real interest!
