The heavy rains on Thursday morning (Sept 5) led to flooding -- the PUB didn't dare to use its much-ridiculed coinage "ponding" this time -- in several areas, especially western Singapore:
http://news.insing.com/gallery/flash-floods-hit-singapore-again/id-b02d3101
Netizens, of course, got busy with memes like this (reproduced in the insing.com story above):
One car agent was quick to promote an SUV model for which "ponding" would be a mere "puddle"...
But you'll have to shell out $193,000 just to do that. A cheaper way would be this!...
I actually saw this vehicle, a Toyota Rush, but I was on a bus and had no camera with me (I am hopeless with my phone camera). I managed to get the pic above from Googles' image library.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Floods or no floods, I am always on the lookout for interesting stuff. This "advisory" was spotted inside a shop in a mall:
As for this brand of distilled water (bottled in Indonesia), "Alamo" seems such a strange choice...
Equally strange is the name on this truck... Hen Tick! I certainly would want to have no truck with ticks; neither would my dogs...
Actually, the company deals in frozen chicken parts. Its slogan is intriguing too:
"Fresh" that is also "frozen"? I guess that's possible -- if Hell freezes over.
Some ads provoke one to push their claim to a logical conclusion:
So, drop one dress size after 20 minutes. What will happen after 40 minutes? After 80 minutes?
This headline too sounds more like an instruction:
The meaning takes on a different (and the correct) tone with just a simple change: "Criticise ministers but don't sling mud: Shanmugam".
------------------------------------------------------
Finally, cows -- like us -- do have navels (I suppose). But this mock-up of a cow must have come from the navy!...
Here's a little snippet from my past my daughters might not know of... I briefly worked in the frozen meats section of a supermarket (Fitzpatrick's... long, long gone from the local scene). I lasted all of one week there before I quit, but I had to learn meat cuts such as those from bovines:
So, in the picture above, it should be "navel end", not "naval end" (correctly depicted in the diagram above). I do believe navy chaps call that (naval end) the stern of the ship. The end.

Same-same or different-different?
The same event may get reportedly differently:
The half-full glass angle...
The half-empty glass angle...
-------------------------------------------------------------
When Federer crashed out of the US Open, one newspaper came up with a catchy headline...
Another stayed with a headline that packs in more but which may be less eye-catching...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sometimes, if something is already well-known, like this book...
... why not take the already well-known book's title and tweak it for an event?...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
But I think you can't beat the Chinese when it comes to the belief that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"...
Haha, "get a caffeine hit at Starbocks"!
-------------------------------------------------------
On a caffeine-high note, here's why (from Mind Your Body) coffee is good for you!

Humour, using 'sign' language...
The funny auto workshop sign (yesterday) came from Auntie Florence. Here's more:
(Good advice for today's cash-rich young Singaporeans who have never stayed on a farm; those so-called holiday farmstays excluded.)

This one below, sent by Angie, adds to my optical illusion collection:

And since the weekend is round the corner, these posters seem apt:

Finally, I totally agree with this statement below:

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I had my car serviced at the authorised workshop and was told the brake calipers needed fixing. My car is still under warranty; otherwise I would have had to fork out quite a bit. Once the warranty is over, I will have to shop around for an independent car workshop. I wonder if this price list is helpful?...
Apparently, there are some busts that need fixing too...
I checked around online and concluded that these bust-up busts needed fixing:
But this one below still looks resplendent, so I guess it does not need any fixing whatsoever.
Some bottoms, as it appears, seem to need fixing too; actually, a lift, so to speak:
Those three words, "bum lift slip" are quite the tongue-twister. Try saying them fast, many times! You'll end up with a lisp, ie, tongue lisp slip (also a tongue-twister).

Read the label (but not the instruction manual)!
Sorry, this is funny only if you understand Singlish...
Nick came across it (you can check up what "pondan" means in http://www.singlishdictionary.com/ ).
It reminds me, a long time ago (thankfully), of the politically incorrect jokes about this brand of toothpaste...
KA too came across an interesting label:
I'll zoom in on the picture of the sleeping lion...
Angie bought a pair of scissors with this puzzling string of words...
As for me, Tiong needed a new alarm clock and he specified that it must have a temperature sensor. I eventually found and bought this one:
I had to programme the settings, of course. But no thanks to this manual that came with the clock! There were three pages of gobbledygook instructions but I had to junk them and use commonsense to set up the clock. This is just the first page...
Ending on a bum note
Remember that butt-shaped mooncake that's being sold this year? Here's the pic:

Twerk... and the butt stops here!
If you are a baby boomer (or older) -- and only if you are a baby boomer (or older) who does not read the newspapers, watch TV or go online to read stuff like my blog -- you are forgiven for not knowing what all the fuss is about this strange word called "twerk". It was the butt of one young woman, Miley Cyrus (again, you are forgiven if...) that has since launched a thousand wisecracks, send-up videos, serious commentaries, etc, etc, on this one word.
Even the venerable Oxford Dictionary was quick to get in on the act:
BuzzFeed.com (from whence the above screen grab came from) has a compelling piece titled We Just Lived Through The Most Twerk-Filled Week In Human History...
http://www.buzzfeed.com/hunterschwarz/we-just-lived-through-the-most-twerk-filled-week-in-human-hi
-------------------------------------------------------------------
But, as the ad folks would say, wait, there's more! Indeed. Read this story and watch the embedded videos, especially Nos 2, 4, 7 and 11 (at least one of the 11 videos has since been deleted though):
11 Hilarious Dancing Dogs That Can Twerk Better Than Miley Cyrus
http://thoughtcatalog.com/2013/11-hilarious-dancing-dogs-that-can-twerk-better-than-miley-cyrus/
My favourite is No 2. That dog is amazing!
-------------------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, over in Singapore's own Ang Mo Kio town, they've invented the Tomato Dance!
Why not? Ang Mo Kio, in Hokkien, can mean "tomato".
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While in Indonesia, there was the Dangdut...
Remember the controversial Indonesian dancer, Inul Daratista, and her gyrating dance, the Dangdut? And did Miley Cyrus take a leaf from her? To wrap up, here's one story about Inul:

Very funny, but...
This very funny humour piece pokes fun at the Western powers' disarray over the Syrian situation:
------------------------------------------------------------------
The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Syria and have therefore raised their security level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.” Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross.” The English have not been “A Bit Cross” since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from “Tiresome” to “A Bloody Nuisance.” The last time the British issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.
The Scots have raised their threat level from “Pissed Off” to “Let’s get the Bastards.” They don’t have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.
The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from “Run” to “Hide.” The only two higher levels in France are “Collaborate” and “Surrender.” The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France ‘s white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country’s military capability.
Italy has increased the alert level from “Shout Loudly and Excitedly” to “Elaborate Military Posturing.” Two more levels remain: “Ineffective Combat Operations” and “Change Sides.”
The Germans have increased their alert state from “Disdainful Arrogance” to “Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs.” They also have two higher levels: “Invade a Neighbour” and “Lose.”
Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.
The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.
Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from “No worries” to “She’ll be right, Mate.” Two more escalation levels remain: “Crikey! I think we’ll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!” and “The barbie is cancelled.” So far no situation has ever warranted use of the last final escalation level.

And as a final thought – Greece is collapsing, the Iranians are getting aggressive, and Rome is in disarray. Welcome back to 430 BC.

Well, the truth is... it's a hoax. Cleese never wrote that piece, as exposed by The Inquisitor:

Likewise, I found this a very nice Sunday read but I suspect it's made up too. Still, enjoy!...
It was written by an 8-year-old named Danny Dutton, who lives in Chula Vista , CA . He wrote it for his third grade homework assignment, to 'explain God.' I wonder if any of us could have done as well?
(and he had such an assignment, in California , and someone published it, I guess miracles do happen!)

Little Boy's Explanation of God --
|
It was written by an 8-year-old named Danny Dutton, who lives in Chula Vista , CA . He wrote it for his third grade homework assignment, to 'explain God.' I wonder if any of us could have done as well?
(and he had such an assignment, in California , and someone published it, I guess miracles do happen!)
EXPLANATION OF GOD:
'One of God's main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth. He doesn't make grownups, just babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way he doesn't have to take up his valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers.''God's second most important job is listening to prayers An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times beside bedtime.God doesn't have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this. Because he hears everything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in his ears, unless he has thought of a way to turn it off.''God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn't go wasting his time by going over your mom and dad's head asking for something they said you couldn't have.'
'Atheists are people who don't believe in God. I don't think there are any in Chula Vista . At least there aren't any who come to our church.'
'Jesus is God's Son. He used to do all the hard work, like walking on water and performing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn't want to learn about God.They finally got tired of him preaching to them and they crucified him. But he was good and kind, like his father, and he told his father that they didn't know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said OK' And God did not let Jesus stay in the grave, but raised him from the dead
'His dad (God) appreciated everything that he had done and all his hard work on earth so he told him he didn't have to go out on the road anymore. He could stay in heaven. So he did. And now he helps his dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones he can take care of himself without having to bother God. Like a secretary, only more important.'
'You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to help you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time.'
'You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there's anybody you want to make happy, it's God!
Don't skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong. And besides the sun doesn't come out at the beach until noon anyway.'
'If you don't believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can't go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He's around you when you're scared, in the dark or when you can't swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids.'
'But...you shouldn't just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and he can take me back anytime he pleases.
And...that's why I believe in God.'
