The 'coolest' job in Singapore, and a 'hot' update on smoke signals...

You can conduct a survey on any subject, polling anyone, from adults to children. Just pick up the phone or stop someone in the street and ask some questions, right? Okay, I'm partly jesting. Surveys have come a long way...

Take this one which surveyed American adults, done by career website CareerCast.Com which recently ranked 200 jobs in the US. Newspaper reporters came in at No 196 and broadcasters were a little better, at No 191.

The survey took into account five factors: physical demands, work environment, income, stress and hiring outlook.

These are the 10 best jobs, from an American perspective:
1) Software engineer
2) Actuary
3) Human resources manager
4) Dental hygienist
5) Financial planner
6) Audiologist
7) Occupational therapist
8) Online advertising manager
9) Computer systems analyst
10) Mathematician

And these are the 10 worst jobs (with lumberjacks at rock bottom, ie No 200):
200) Lumberjack
199) Dairy farmer
198) Enlisted military soldier
197) Oil rig worker
196) Reporter (newspaper)
195) Waiter/waitress
194) Meter reader
193) Dishwasher
192) Butcher
191) Broadcaster

Interestingly, neither car salesmen nor politicians were on the lists! insing, com has a story on this survey:

I wonder what a similar survey in Singapore would show? How will politicians be ranked, now that they are earning less?

Which reminds me of a survey -- of children -- in January this year, as reported by Channel NewsAsia and carried by xin.msn ("S'pore kids pick President as 'coolest' job: Survey):

http://news.xin.msn.com/en/singapore/article.aspx?cp-documentid=5745067

The survey on the career choice of 120 children in Singapore -- between the ages of seven and 14 -- found that nearly 10 per cent of them think that being the President is the "coolest" job in the world. This was followed by being a pilot, a police officer and a singer.

When asked on the first "three things they would do" if they became the Prime Minister, responses ranged from helping to save energy and water, rounding up sick animals and sending them to a vet as well as creating scholarships for those in need.

Other responses included building another theme park like Universal Studios, banning cockroaches and even making it compulsory to eat chips every day.

The study was done by recruitment firm Adecco. The survey found that being a teacher is the top career choice, followed by being a doctor, pilot or flight attendant. The youngsters who opted to become a teacher had salary expectations ranging from S$50 to S$10,000 per month.

I then found this blog "The Singapore Job Blog", which highlighted Adecco's 2011 finding:

Last year, Singapore children's five top jobs were:
1. Soccer Player
2. Doctor
3. Police Officer
4. Lawyer
5. Scientist

When asked what the first “three things they would do” if they were to become the Prime Minister of Singapore, these were some of the responses:

- Walk into my office
- Ensure that everyone in Singapore has an education
- Make the island bigger
- Change the law to allow 12 year-olds to drive
- Make charitable donations compulsory
- Import more Korean K-pop music for Singaporeans to enjoy
- Ensure that we are a nation of kind people
- Air-condition the entire nation
- Push for more electric cars and buses
- Ensure that young people fully understand important global issues
- Sit on my new chair and relax.

Finally, I had much earlier blogged about how American Indians sent smoke signals n days of yore. This "update" in today's ST magazine supplement, Digital Life, is pretty cute!...
