I thought this letter by a reader, Young Pak Nang, published in Today (4 April, page 16) spoke for many of us who were similarly curious. I too await the official reply:
"Retirement or resignation?"
There have been announcements that four senior-level officers are leaving their public-sector posts, possibly to enter politics [note: all four since confirmed]. They are Brigadier-General Tan Chuan Jin (aged 42), Major-General Chan Chun Sing (41), Mr Heng Swee Kiat of MAS (49) and Mr Lawrence Wong of EMA (42).
According to press reports, these people -- all in their 40s -- are retiring from and not resigning. Does this mean they will receive a pension on leaving the service and become eligible for medical benefits for life?
I believe they have many more years to go before reaching the official retirement age, so under what special provisions are they allowed to retire instead of being required to resign from service?
