Our toast to National Day...

We opened a bottle of Bordeaux white while watching the National Day Parade on local TV. Finney the "corky" Finn, who came back with us following our Baltic trip, joined in:

I was not expecting the petrol companies to come up with a whopping 47% discount on fuel prices today, Singapore's 47th birthday, although I joked about it yesterday. Still, Caltex did give motorists a National Day treat -- an 18% discount:


I did not see similar ads by the other petrol companies. Bleah to them! This is what one online forum poster said:

" just pumped. 18% discount at all Caltex stations today only 9 Aug up to 2359hrs. Pay with Citibank Dividend MasterCard and enjoy additional 5% rebate. Total 23% discount. no wonder all other petrol stations like ghost town when I drove past laugh.gif "

What has been happening in the build-up to past N-Days has been an expectation that there will be fuel discounts. Indeed, in 2009 (44th N-Day), Shell gave out a 44-cent discount per litre between 4 and 5pm, which led to jams and bad tempers leading to its stations in busy parts of the island. Maybe that's why the petrol firms -- apart from Caltex -- fought shy of such promotions this Aug 9.

Still, there were rumours...

Speaking of rumours, there was a very mischievous one floating around a few days just before N-Day. Indeed, one friend described it as becoming "viral". So, many people heaved a big sigh of relief when they saw a certain VIP stroll in at the Parade venue in Marina Bay. Those rumour-mongers were simply sick.

I had blogged about that silly Mentos video ad, "National Night" on Aug 2. Now, it has appeared in print too, in today's ST:


Now read the fine print above, from the ad:


The asterisked bit says: "Financially secure adults in stable, long-term relationships". Huh? Come on, use plainspeak. You want to urge Singaporeans to bonk on "National Night" but they must (a) be earning enough money? (b) and be married to each other? Then say so, not the above mumbo-jumbo! But above all, such a contrived caveat is unnecessary in a supposedly fun, cheeky ad, and is probably a last-minute party-pooping insertion by the legal folks.
