Satire 101

Yesterday, I posted here the MDA's letter to ST, headlined "Why MDA reclassified racially satirical movie". But what is satire? And when do we deem satire to be racist? Would that not be contradictory if satire in fact pokes fun at racism?

Can there be racially satirical content that is acceptable here or is it the case that by self-definition in Singapore -- with its past history of racial and religious riots -- all racial satire will fail the "OB marker" test? And, of course, who here in Singapore decides what kind of satire is unacceptable?

There are some good sites that explain what is satire and provide examples, such as:

Singapore satire

I also discovered this excellent two-parter on YouTube simply titled "Singapore Satire". You will learn a lot, so they are "must-watch"!...

It looks like social satire is the easiest to be accommodated because it can serve as a catharsis-like valve (even though I am sure there will still be OB markers), political satire remains risky to undertake and racial/religious satire is the most vexious simply because of our troubled history and because any public complaint lodged about such satire is then followed by a prescribed course of official action, as has now happened with the most recent example.

Still, I wonder if the Talking Cock website's caveat can serve as a general template:

You can read the rest of this preamble at:

In other words, if the movie now at the centre of the storm, Sex.Violence.Family Values, gets the go-ahead and is allowed to be screened, those who want to see it will need to agree to a suitably worded caveat. It makes things more cumbersome but no one can then say, after seeing the movie, that he or she had been offended.

Finally, mrbrown (http://www.mrbrown.com/) took a dig at the recent MDA brouhaha, as these screen grabs show:
