A relaxing Saturday's read...

I enjoyed this piece by Lucy Kellaway (ST Saturday, March 16). Amazingly, as she found out, there really was a Royal Navy ship called HMS Cockchafer! And she used the oh-so-British word "skiving" (avoidance of work, duty, task, etc) which Singapore NSmen ever since NS was first started here in 1967 have also been bandying about ever since:

Still on the subject of naval vessels, did you do a double-take on this ST picture story (March 16)?

I suspect most laymen would not have noticed it... but, no, Singapore does not have a battleship. Even the US does not have any more operational battleships, which are a class of warships just as Singapore's RSS Intrepid is a separate -- and very much smaller -- class ie a frigate.

Another interesting Saturday read was this NYT piece which appeared in TODAY (March 16):

And I hope the "relevant authorities" will act on these two letters to ST Forum (March 16)...

The world now knows there's a new Catholic Pope. When will there be a female Pope? Here's one hopeful (briefly), albeit a cartoon strip character:

Finally, this man (ST, March 16) says he thought he was sleeping at home (where he presumably does not like to be fettered with clothing in bed) but "when I work up, I was in the police station"...
