The enemy of my enemy is my friend? Um, it's complicated.

Middle East International Politics 101

Are you confused by what is going on in the Middle East?
Let me explain.

The USA supports the Iraqi government in the fight against ISIS.

The USA does not like ISIS, but ISIS is supported by Saudi Arabia, a US partner in the region.

The USA does not like President Assad in Syria. The US supports the fight against him, but ISIS is also fighting against him.

The USA does not like Iran, but Iran supports the Iraqi government in its fight against ISIS.

So some of the USA's friends support its enemies, some enemies are now America's friends, and some of its enemies are fighting against the USA's other enemies, who Washington wants to see defeated. But the US does not want its enemies who are fighting the USA's enemies to emerge victorious.

If the people the US wants to defeat are defeated, they could be replaced by people the Americans like even less.

And all this was started by the USA invading a country to drive out terrorists who were not actually there until America went in to drive them out.

So it's quite simple, really.
Do you understand NOW?
